The Burlington County Bridge Commission maintains and operates 2 major bridges, the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge and Burlington-Bristol Bridge, as well as 6 minor bridges.

Three appointed Commissioners oversee the Burlington County Bridge Commission, which was created in 1948 when the Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders adopted a resolution creating it.

The Commission’s stated mandate “is to provide cost-efficient, effective management for the bridge and to ensure safe, accessible crossing for residents, commuters and visitors.” 

Our first priority has always been to provide for the safety of the community and bridge users.  Here’s how we put safety first:
  • Engineering inspections are done at all Commission bridges and facilities on annual basis—exceeding Federal and State requirements
  • We have a full-time, on-site resident engineer who is intimately familiar with our bridges
  • Tens of millions of dollars in necessary bridge repairs have been made to date

The Bridge Commission saves Burlington County taxpayers money by maintaining its non-toll roads and bridges at no charge

Through economic development and improvement authority powers granted to the Burlington County Bridge Commission in 2002 (under Senate Bill No. 2533), the Bridge Commission has saved Burlington County taxpayers more than $13 million dollars by providing local governments and nonprofits with financing options only available through pooled lending.

The Commission has approximately 150 employees consisting of toll collectors, police officers, maintenance staff, clerical and administrative personnel in two locations, Palmyra and Burlington.
